He writes that the images summoned memories of white nationalism and "proto-fascism" he encountered during his military service -- and reinforced the cost of extremism in the ranks, too long unchecked but finally being recognized by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in his call for a stand down for "needed discussions" about extremism.
