Republicans were against the Electoral College before they were for it

Robert Alexander writes that from Nixon to Ford to Trump himself, Republicans have at times favored a direct popular vote. Although Republicans are largely supportive of it today, electoral history suggests that views of the institution change depending on electoral outcomes -- if the outcome serves your interest, then all is well; when it doesn't, then we see major problems.
